shelter island
as a kid, I grew up hearing a lot about my Norwegian heritage, and the lore about an island called Dragland, where my fisherman ancestors lived.
only by the hands of fate, I live in Norway now and was able to go on a quest to find the real Dragland.

it´s not an island in itself, but is a neighbourhood on an island called tjeldøya, which roughly translates to "shelter island"--waaaaaay up north in the arctic circle.
​
the feeling of seeing this place, which existed only in my childhood fantasy, was overwhelming.
I described it to friends, as feeling like the mountains were "hugging" me.
there was a sense of coming home, for the first time.
the hours spent there felt like a dream state and I immediately went home and wrote a song about the experience.

I wrote this song in 2011, after suffering a terrible loss.
we recorded it and released a studio version on the tumble town ep.
I never played it live.
never even tried to sing it again after that day in the studio.
in 2024 I was tinkering around on the guitar, when this chord progression started materialising and I realised I was playing this song.
music is so ALIVE. you can take a song and play it in a different way and even if the chords and lyrics are the same, it hits differently.
I felt a wave of relief, love and joy wash over me.
the body heals, the heart takes longer, but music is the heart's ultimate medicine. I am so grateful to have music in my life.

in the year 2000 I met Leo Sidran. we became fast friends and music partners and proceeded to record three records & tour the world together. a high point was breaking the top 40 in Spain with our cover of Marvin Gaye´s "let´s get it on".
